Pebble Mosaic for Kempinski Hotel München, Germany

This summer I was Commissioned by FG stijl architects in Amsterdam to create a mosaic for their renovation project at Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, (four seasons), Kempinski, Munich, Germany.

For this project I was commissioned to create a pebble mosaic niche display in the entrance into the hotels, Michelin star restaurant.

The mosaic was to be based on one of the historic pebble mosaics at the Bavarian National Museum, located just around the corner from the hotel.

These historic mosaics were created using pebbles collected from the Isar river, which flows through the city. They also feature floral designs using semi precious gemstones.

For this project I created the mosaic off site in my studio in Waterford before shipping to Germany where I then went on to install the piece onsite over a number of days.

The greatest challenge for this piece was having to create the mosaic on fibre mosaic mesh, in sections which would then be shipped and installed on site in Munich.

In order to insure the mosaic would fit correctly I had to recreate the domed niche in my workshop.

While onsite at the hotel I was also commissioned to install some Italian mosaics from famous Itilian mosaic factory SICIS mosaics.

This project was part of an extensive renovation of part of the historic hotel, that saw some of the finest crafts people from across Germany and abroad employed. See the short video below featuring some of these crafts people at work.
