The Fishers of Knowledge

Commissioned under the government's 'Percent for Art Scheme' for St. Andrews National School in Lucan, Co. Dublin. The design of this creative space is based on the theme of St. Andrew, represented in fluid motions of waves, currents and sails.

The project is titled ‘Fishers of Knowledge’ which is a play on the phrase “fishers of men” which was spoken by Jesus when He was calling two of His disciples, Simon and Andrew, to follow Him. From a distance, the dominant feature of the outdoor space is the two large standing stone slabs which reach a height of almost 3 meters. These stone slabs represent the sails of a ship and stand behind the teacher’s stone chair. Spanning out on either side of the teacher’s chair are two tiers of stone walls. The stonework in these walls is flowing and spiralling, representing waves. Seasonal flowers are planted between and behind these walls to encourage wildlife into the area and give the students a greater sense of being in nature.

Pebble Mosaic for Kempinski München, Germany

Commissioned by FG stijl architects in Amsterdam for their renovation project at Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, (four seasons), Kempinski, Munich, Germany.

For this project Stone Art was commissioned to create a pebble mosaic niche display in the entrance into the hotels, Michelin star restaurant. The mosaic was to be based on one of the historic pebble mosaics at the Bavarian National Museum, located just around the corner from the hotel.

These historic mosaics were created using pebbles collected from the Isar river, which flows through the city.

For this project Sunny created the mosaic off site in his studio in Waterford before shipping to Germany where he then went on to install the piece onsite over a number of days.

This project was part of an extensive renovation of part of the historic hotel, that saw some of the finest crafts people from across Germany and abroad employed. See a short video featuring some of these crafts people here.
