The Artist
Stone as a language
Raised in the lush countryside of west Cork, Sunny Wieler has spent a lifetime in conversation with stone — Ireland's most ancient and enduring material. After graduating in Fine Art & Sculpture at the Crawford College of Art & Design in 2002, he spent years working as a landscape gardener, discovering a deep passion for natural stone along the way.
In 2005 Sunny founded Stone Art, combining his fine art training with traditional stonework to create something entirely his own. What began as a landscaping practice has evolved into a full studio art practice — public sculptures, intricate natural stone mosaics, and bespoke stonework for homes and gardens across Ireland and abroad.
Much of the work is shaped by a love for Irish landscape and folklore — the belief that stone holds memory, and that working with it honestly produces something both timeless and deeply of this place. Sunny works from his studio near Blarney, Co. Cork.
“I could look at this mosaic for hours on end. Every time I look out the window it looks different — sometimes glinting gold in the morning sun, sometimes sparkling at midday.”
